A Challenge of Change
While traveling, Ichi meets a stranger named Tatsuzo. They travel together to Ashido Village, home to a copper mine, corrupt government officials and a ruthless yakuza boss named Yasaburo – whose thugs are forcing the locals out of their businesses. Ichi learns that his traveling companion was once known as Tatsuzo the Sword-Thrower. Together they help a young woman named Oshin to protect her business.
The Flower that Bloomed with the Lullaby
Ichi befriends a young boy named Tarokichi, who is the son of a wealthy merchant. Ichi agrees to take the boy to his father, as his mother has died – however they are followed by the yakuza, whose greedy boss wants to claim a reward for himself for the return of the boy.
A Memorial Day and the Bell of Life
Ichi refuses to draw his sword for 12 hours on the anniversary of his mother’s death. However, after saving the life of a boy he has a very perilous wait while dealing with the yakuza and being followed by a ronin, Monji, who wants a duel with the blind swordsman.
The Kannon Statue that was Tied
Ichi is drawn into a feud between two rival yakuza families who want a sacred Jizu statue placed with them. Whoever has the statue will draw customers from a regularly held festival to gamble with them. However, Ichi is meanwhile trying to help a young woman who had been wrongfully imprisoned to be reunited with her daughter.
The Heartless Man, Touched by Compassion
Ichi meets a young boy, and subsequently saves his drunken father from a beating by yakuza thugs. The father’s debts may force the boy’s sister into prostitution. Ichi attempts to pay back the debt through gambling, but the father makes a deal that puts Ichi and the boy into jeopardy. Meanwhile, Ichi ends up dueling a very skilled ronin swordsman who is trying to raise money for medical treatment of his blind sister.
