Souma Toru knows the land of the logged-in well. He and his fearless gang of hackers, Steppen Wolf, once had the run of the place. But on their last mission, tragedy came to call. With the group disbanded and their leader Yuuya dead, Toru’s forced to join the ranks of FLAK: a military organization charged with protecting the hidden data paradise deep within the vast network of servers. Indentured into service and out for revenge, the young man reflects on the dead of the past as a ghost of the present takes shape.

Toru’s life is in chaos – Both online and off… The discovery of who killed his best friend, the sudden disbanding of his FLAK platoon and Ren, the sad little girl who haunts him. As the young hacker gets caught up in one plot after another, each exposing the previous for a lie, his world is shattered as memory comes to life. His past soon becomes a manhunt for a living ghost. When nothing is as it seems, love can be a monster and villains can quickly prove to be heroes.

Toru may wear a military uniform, but his heart is still on the fringe, courting revenge. Other dark dealings persist – Rumors of questionable tactics, of technology and flesh united. As a joint exercise between two organizations goes offline, whispers of mysterious death pass among the populace. Toru mourns what once was, but a specter of a different sort shows the hacker the promise of peaceful dreams. A man split between two worlds is often prone to nightmares.

The spheres of reality and the wired are clashing and crumbling and the Wired Ghost is to blame. The entire system is crashing and a virus is spreading through every network, every life and every machine attached to both. Some wish to destroy the threat. Some hope to capture and exploit the menace. But Toru knows that he must free the abomination once and for all, a beast created by the folly of man and nurtured into something unspeakable by machine. What is reality? The very best and the very worst of us all.
