Why is Zelgadis trying to resurrect the demon lord Shabranigdo? How can he be stopped? And can Rezo "the red priest" be trusted? As Lina ponders these questions, she suddenly finds her magic has stopped working. And it's at this point that Zelgadis and his henchmen attack.

On her way to Atlas City, 16-year-old Lina Inverse is attacked by bandits. The powerful sorceress doesn't need help but she gets it anyway, from chivalrous swordsman Gourry, and the two become travelling companions. Stopping at a small village, Lina and Gourry are asked to kill a troublesome dragon. But Lina overdoes the magic and destroys not only the dragon but the village too....

Lina and Gourry visit a magic shop to sell the treasures Lina snatched from the bandits. They're attacked by a mummy called Zolf and his trolls, who are after one of the stolen items. Lina and Gourry fight their way out of the shop, but that evening they encounter Zolf again, along with a mysterious stranger.

Zolf's accomplice is introduced as Zelgadis. A mixture of human, golem and demon, he is a creation of pure evil. When Lina refuses to sell him her booty, Zelgadis tries to take it by force and Lina is only saved by the arrival of Rezo, the legendary great sage also known as "the red priest."
