While Cuba and the U.S. have long been at odds in a number of areas, there's one thing the two nations agree on -- they both love baseball and consider it to be their national sport. In 1999, the Baltimore Orioles traveled to Havana to play a series of exhibition games, making them the first American team to play in Cuba since Fidel Castro rose to power. In exchange, the Cuban National Team came to Baltimore and took on the Orioles on their home fields at Camden Yards. Filmmakers Michael Skolnik and William O'Neill traveled to Cuba with the Orioles and also recorded the Cuban team's visit to Maryland. La Esquina Caliente is a documentary that examines this unusual bit of international diplomacy over the baseball diamond, as well as offering a look at nine fans from each country who watch this athletic exchange with great interest.
