1914. Framton Nuttel, a nervous Londoner, visits an old country house where he meets Vera, a teenage girl. Vera tells him how three years ago to the day her aunt’s husband and two sons went off shooting, never to return; they drowned in a treacherous bog. Her aunt waits by the opens doors every day, still expecting that they will be back in time for tea.
