  • Liberty In Restraint

    Liberty In Restraint

Michael Ney’s subject is the subterranean world of BDSM and alternative sex filtered through the eyes of fetish photographer Noel Graydon, aka Master Venom. Bondage, dominance and submission, fetishism and algolagnic ritual are all expected bread and butter, but Graydon’s ‘the insider looking out’ and Ney’s airy style lift up the whole affair, to give us instead a portrayal of civility and mild-mannered gaiety that is set against a putrid backdrop of upper circle Christian catechism. The outcome is a parable of two moral scenes: the unspoken principles contained in adult open sexual catharsis beside the dissolute morals of the guardians and stockists of ascetic convention. From outside the fence, transgressive sexuality seems to be about reining in violence and fear and to a rephrased perpetuation of abhorrent behaviour once inflicted upon the subject. Liberty in Restraint points to the disbanding of this idea, it reworks shock and trauma to the point of distilled catharsis. One has the impression of wellbeing imparted to the viewer once the ritualistic cycle has been wrapped up and the needles and gasmasks removed. Don’t you wish Bush, Blair, the Pope, their respective entourages and loyal fan clubs, fucked one another S&M style, instead of fucking about with the world we live in? MF

  • Forum on Personal Documentary

    Forum on Personal Documentary

In documentary, the personal is always political, but it also needs to be courageous, engrossing, challenging. Today, the ease and relative low cost of production with digital cameras and desktop editing has brought a flood of personal films - non-linear, sometimes an essay, sometimes a diary, sometimes a journey - but not all succeed. This new style has brought with it new challenges for both film-maker and audience. What are the strategies by which a personal film engages with the wider society and with its audience. These are the questions we're throwing at our panel of documentary-makers, including Tahir Cambis (director of 1997 doco, "Exile in Sarajevo") and Ross ("Sherman's March") McElwee. McElwee is a Visiting Lecturer at Harvard University's Dept of Visual and Environmental Studies, where he teaches a course in film-making. "Bright Leaves", his subjective autobiographical meditation on the allure of cigarettes and their troubling legacy, is also about film-making - home movie, documentary and fiction film. http://www.ozdox.org

  • The Waterside Workers Federation Film Unit

The Waterside Workers Federation Film Unit

Documentary has a long history of interrogating the world and representing different points of view, voices that don't always get much of a hearing in those media which are institutionally or industrially controlled. Today television is the primary locus for documentary exhibition, but throughout its history, there has also been a tradition of alternative forms of documentary production and distribution both in Australia and across the world. In the sixties and seventies there was the Melbourne Filmmakers Co-op and 'Reel Women' in Melbourne, the Women's Film Group and the Sydney Filmmakers' Co-op in Sydney, the Newsreel Group in the USA, and in UK, the film workshop movement spearheaded by Cinema Action and the Berwick Street Collective. These organizations of filmmakers were dedicated to making non-fiction works in ways that didn't replicate the hierarchical industrial model, and distributing them outside the accepted channels. And their subject matter often reflected a preoccupation with issues such as war and peace, gender, class and race. But before the sixties, there was the fifties... and, while in Melbourne the 'Realist Film Unit' had made a series a independent films (1946-52), in Sydney a small band of filmmakers stood out for the productivity and sustained excellence of their work. This was the Waterside Workers Federation Film Unit. A group of three - Jock Levy, Keith Gow and Norma Disher - made 17 films between 1953-9, most of them for trade unions... The films were financed by the trade union movement, principally the Waterside Workers Federation. They spoke of important issues - working conditions, health and safety, housing. They weren't screened much in cinemas although The Hungry Miles was screened at the Sydney Film Festival in 1955 - instead they were taken by the filmmakers into the streets, homes and workplaces and were screened and discussed on the spot! The unit was indymedia before indymedia. Norma Disher, a member of this pioneering Australian filmmaking group will be the special guest of Ozdox on August 12. Norma will be in conversation with John Hughes, one of Australia's leading filmmakers, whose 1981 film about the unit, Film-Work, introduced a newer generation of filmmakers to their works. http://www.ozdox.org

  • OzDox: Video activism and the Chiapas Media Project

OzDox: Video activism and the Chiapas Media Project

World-wide along with the extended use of video in both domestic and public environments, in the last decade we have seen the development of different independent and community media projects (not affiliated to media networks). These projects are run by communities (virtual or real) and respond to the beliefs and information needs of individuals not of large corporations. Independent media are becoming important instruments of democratisation, attempting to empower minorities and to challenge media institutions and their links to power structures. Amongst the different independent media projects video technology is playing an important role. Video technology allows ordinary people to register and report issues and events the big mainstream media corporations do not cover, like the uprising of the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional or Zapatista Nartional Liberation Army (EZLN) on 1 January 1994. Thanks to the auspices of the Pro medios de Comunicacion Comunitaria, also known as the Chiapas Media Project, indigenous Zapatistas in Chiapas and peasants in Guerrero, Mexico, have been able to learn how to use the video camera as a key weapon in their struggles for recognition and self-determination. The Chiapas Media Project is a collective media project that provides training and tools for indigenous peoples and peasants to produce their own videos. What makes the experience of the Chiapas Media Project unique is that it works with indigenous peoples and peasants. It has given them the training and equipment to become independent video-makers, to be able to self-represent and create their own audiovisual messages about who they are what are they fighting for, and what are they accomplishing in their struggle.

    Bal Can Can

Santino and Trendafil should be two strangers. One cruises along as the owner of a sleazy strip joint and a small time crook in Rome, the latter lives in Macedonia in utter fear of his existence, locked in a life that seems to be synchronised with all sorts of national, international and natural disasters and yet their pasts decide otherwise. Delving fifty years back, we find that their fathers were blood brothers. Santino's father was emotionally indebted to Trendafil's. Upon his deathbed he bequeths this burden to Santino, to help out his blood brothers' son should the need ever arise. The year is 2001. Escaping from forced conscription in Macedonia, Trendafil and his wife Ruza set out towards a new life, but end up chasing after Ruza's dead mother, her corpse wrapped in an Oriental carpet, stolen from the roof of their getaway car. In spite of himself, Santino is dragged into this wild goose chase that will propel them across Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Kosovo. This enchanting and refreshingly amusing comedy is painted onto a serious canvas, that of the Balkan war. Through a set of encounters with gruesome and perfectly depicted characters, Darko Mitrevski parodies the war conflicts, exposing their futility, pettiness, cruelty and injustice

  • Rahil's Secret

    Rahil's Secret

Rahil is a twelve-year- old Iraqi girl living in an impoverished neighbourhood in Italy. Her guardians, Jamal and Anna, often argue and the local bullies label her ‘stinky’. Despite the hardships, she clings to the hope that her destiny is to travel as her name (which means ‘nomad’) would suggest. Her only friends are a doll that she names Mohammed and her pet dog, dyed blue to match the colour of the Baghdad sky. There are unanswered questions in Rahil’s life namely the real identity of her guardians and the reason why Jamal receives payments from the local mafia. Then there are Rahil’s vivid memories of trips through the desert with armed men in Arab dress. When one of Jamal’s ‘business deals’ ends in violence, Rahil is left to fend for herself and wander the rail tracks alone, encountering a variety of characters who help her fulfil her destiny and gradually reveal her secret. Rahil’s Secret follows in the tradition of classic films such as Whistle Down the Wind and The Spirit of the Beehive, where the world of children with all its petty cruelties collides with the harsher adult domain. The film’s story has a contemporary political resonance and effectively reflects the immigrant experience as Rahil faces pressure to conform to the beliefs of her adopted country and suppress her own racial identity. Both an intriguing mystery and an entirely believable portrait of childhood, the film features an amazing debut performance from Ons Ben Raies as Rahil.
