Located on the Pacific Ocean, the archipelago is practically the only one in the world presenting such a wide diversity of species. Although it is believed that the Native American already had visited them before, they were "discovered" in the 16th Century by Tomas de Berlanga (Bishop of Panama) who named the islands. From that moment on the islands became shelter of pirates and seamen; by mid 19th century they got the visit of Charles Darwin, who observed its spectacular wildlife, concluding his Theory of the Evolution of the Species.
