Join the adventure as six climbers embark on a month-long journey to scale the icy summit of Chile's San Valentín. Theirs is a story of survival, courage and boundless determination. The Patagonian icefield is the third largest in the world. At more than 4,000 meters, San Valentín dominates this frozen wasteland. Desolate and inaccessible, it had been conquered only four times in history - until a team of determined South Africans set their sights on Patagonia's most prized peak. Here on the windswept tip of South America, just reaching base camp is half the battle. A 900km boat journey is followed by an arduous trek through dense forest double carrying 300 kilos of survival supplies. Once on the glacier, a 10-day trek over the icecap separates our team from the base of the mountain. The eerie, barren snowscape is riddled with ice pinnacles and gouged by deadly, hidden crevasses. One false step and the expedition could come to a tragic end. When finally in sight of the summit, the expedition is forced to establish a base camp and wait for a clear weather window to make their one all-or-nothing assault on the peak. But, as the weather clears, the ground starts to rumble. In seconds a massive avalanche is crashing down on the party, coming within 100 meters of wiping them out completely. Determination triumphs in the end and our fearless team becomes only the fifth expedition ever to conquer San Valentín. To ecstatic cheers of "Viva Mandela Viva", the flag of the new South Africa flies over one of the most extreme environments on earth.
